What is Signal?

A signal is a single-valued function of time that conveys information. In other words, at every point in time, there is a unique value of the function. This value may either be a real number, giving a real-valued signal or a complex number, giving a complex-valued signal.
signal Example: An electrical circuit signal may represent a time-varying voltage measured across a resistor.

What is the System?

A system is any physical set of elements that takes a signal and produces a signal.
The parameters of the signal are:
  1. Amplitude
  2. phase
  3. frequency

ABOUT THIS SUBJECT:

Signal and Systems has always been a subject of research and study for Electronics engineers. It provided us the stairs while we shifted to Digital electronics from Analog electronics and also the base of analog electronics. The whole signal processing applications are based on Signal and Systems. Analysis of period of a signal, its power, bandwidth, frequency and conversion from one physical domain to another and further their applications for encryption and decryption of data and a lot more is covered through Signal and System.
It is a very interesting subject and a scoring one because most of the problems are based on numerical analysis and derivations and complex calculations and very less theory. Even more interesting is when you get into the deep to the creation of algorithms for coding and decoding of information.

There's a lot more if one is able to understand the concept of the study of this subject.
the signal means anything at the input which varies with the certain parameter it might be a time as per book which carries some information depend upon that parameter
system means anything to which input is given which will work upon it according to it inbuilt environment (it will be the function of that input).

A Practical Approach to Signals & Systems” is a precise book explaining the fundamentals of the subject. The book is divided into simple chapters with illustrative figures and simpler formulations. The problems also are suitable for beginners and are not very extensive. It can very easily develop concepts as the fundamentals are explained concisely and in an understanding manner.


The later reader can challenge to more problem solving by referring to MJ Roberts, “Signals & Systems”. It is also a simpler book but with extensive problems with solutions. The problems although being extensive are not very advanced so it is a good book to get the confidence and shift to the more advanced books like Allan Oppenheim or Simon Haykin

If you want to get a good grasp on the subject you should study this book. For Signals and Systems go for Oppenheim/Wilsky. It's tough to understand because the subject itself is highly conceptual and requires deep study. The practice exercises of this book would give you a solid basis in SS. Another book to read is Linear Signals and systems by Lathi. Do not go for Simon Haykin. It is not for beginners.
This is the best book in the area of signals and systems. This book is strongly recommended and added as a reference by IITs, NITs and various MOOCs for signals and Systems. I find this book very easy to understand and quite good. Every chapter includes so many problems so that you get a good grasp of the subject. This book helps me in my preparation for the gate examination. You can download the PDF of this book and its solution manual is also available.
