A system is an entity that has certain inputs that are mapped on to the corresponding outputs under a fixed rule of law.

Now, a system is said to be a control system by means of which any quantity of interest can be altered or maintained at the desired level by changing the dynamics of the system.

What we can control through some means of the system is called a control system. we can define the control system through some basic examples also.

• A WATER TANK

The man continuously keeps a watch on the height of water, if somehow it gets increased the man will then open the valve accordingly and will close it once the desired height of the water is reached.

• KETTLE:

 It has a control system that drives the heat of the water inside to the desired target. It starts heating the water and when the target is reached, it stops heating. When the water loses enough heat, kettle starts to heat it up again. This is a primitive control system. And there are many methods for more complicated systems.

Modern Control Engineering by Katsuhiko Ogata. One of the finest books in the control system. All the concepts are mentioned very intuitively and there are a lot of solved out examples using matlab&simulink as well. If you're really interested in Control systems, this is the book for you.
